What is Kybella™?

First and only FDA approved injectable treatment for submental fat reduction in order to improve the appearance of a double chin.

How does Kybella work?

Deoxycholic acid is an active ingredient of KYBELLA. It is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of fat. When injected into the fat deposits beneath your chin, KYBELLA causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat and get absorbed by the body.

How is the procedure performed?

Series of small injections (usually 15-20) are delivered into the submental area where the fat deposits are located. Procedure takes about 10-15 minutes in the office.

Are Kybella injections painful?

Most patients report mild discomfort and some burning sensation within the first few minutes after the injections. The pain usually subsides rapidly.

Is there downtime?

For most patients, downtime is minimal and occurs most commonly after the first treatment session. Downtime is mainly related to the submental swelling that usually subsides within few days after the treatment. There may be some bruising, pain, numbness, redness, and areas of hardness in the treatment area. The patients are encouraged to wear a supportive neck band as much as they can for the first 2-3 days after the procedure. Downtime seems to decrease with the subsequent treatments.

How many treatments are needed?

Commonly 2-3 treatments are required to achieve good result. Depending on the degree of lipodystrophy, some patients may require more than 3 treatments. Once your chin profile has improved, you may not need to be treated with KYBELLA again.

What is the interval between treatments?

Usually 5-6 weeks

Is there skin tightening with Kybella?

There is some skin tightening with KYBELLA which is associated with the inflammatory process due to the procedure.

Who is the best candidate for Kybella treatment?

Patients with submental fullness due to fat excess and with minimal skin laxity.

How much does Kybella cost?

The cost of Kybella depends on the number of treatments and the amount of medication (vials) per each treatment. Commonly, first 2 treatments require 2 vials of Kybella each (sometimes more depending on the amount of excess fat), and the third treatment may just need only one vial.

The cost per vial in our practice is $600.

What’s patient satisfaction with Kybella treatments?

According to the pilot study, about 80% of Kybella patients reported satisfaction with the results of the treatment. Patient satisfaction rate based on the current RealSelf.com data is more than 90%.
