All About Liquid Rhinoplasty

There are several ways the nose can be reshaped with fillers. The most common way is to camouflage the appearance of irregular bumps (commonly the result of trauma or prior nasal surgery) or dorsal hump. Injecting the bridge above and/or below the bump can make the dorsum appear straighter and more uniform. Although this creates a straighter nose, it does not make it smaller. To create a smaller nose and remove the excess bridge, a rhinoplasty surgery is required.

Hyaluronic Acid

Many dermal fillers used in aesthetic medicine are hyaluronic-acid-based. Hyaluronic acid is present in the skin and develops naturally, making it safe and effective to use to fill and add shape to many areas of the body. It is most often used in the face, particularly the lips and cheeks, to add volume to lacking areas.

When used for non-surgical rhinoplasty, hyaluronic acid-based fillers can be added to virtually any part of the nose to define and refine its shape. When surgeons use precision injections (fractions of a milliliter of gel), they can create symmetry and fill irregularities or imperfections that may bother patients. (1)

How Fillers Are Used for Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty

In patients with a flat nasal bridge, Dr. Ovchinsky may use fillers to augment the dorsum. This procedure is commonly requested by Asian and African American patients who often have flatter noses. This treatment can give results similar to rhinoplasty surgery

The nose can be further reshaped by filling dents, hollows, or indentations. In those who have had prior rhinoplasty surgery and have irregularities, using a filler can be a welcome alternative to undergoing a more complex revision rhinoplasty surgery. This is especially true if the imperfections after surgery are minor (like small depressions in areas around the tip and bridge) and small refinements are only necessary.

Many patients want the droopiness of their nasal tip to be lifted with injections. A droopy tip of the nose can be caused by an overactive depressor septi nasi muscle that pulls down the nasal tip, especially when smiling or articulating. Botulinum toxin products (such as DYSPORT or Xeomin) can be injected in between the nostrils to relax this muscle and create a more upturned nose. This will usually last 3 to 5 months at a time. Fillers can be further added where the nose meets the lip to support the tip at its base.

Using both of these techniques together (filler and tox) gives the best results, but the reality is that it lifts the tip by 2 to 3 mm in the best cases which is not very much. Because of this, the non-surgical approach is best reserved for patients who only require a small amount of lifting of the tip. For those patients with heavy or droopier tips, rhinoplasty surgery is usually a better option. The difference between surgery and the non-surgical approach is simply that surgery gives a long-lasting result that does not require repeat treatments.

Benefits of a Liquid Rhinoplasty

There are many benefits to receiving non-surgical rhinoplasty: (2)

  • Asymmetry Correction
  • Bridge Improvement
  • Nose Tip Projection or Improvement
  • Smooth Humps or Depressions
  • Subtle, yet Distinct Changes
  • Improve Upon Prior Rhinoplasty Surgery
  • Minimally-Invasive – Before fillers, traditional, surgical rhinoplasty was the only way to change the shape of your nose. Now you can alter certain aspects without going under the knife.
  • Little to No Recovery Time – Injectables usually require no downtime, so you can receive your treatment and not have to worry about facial healing.

Fillers can offer comprehensive results that are:

  • Reversible if need be
  • Optimal for those unwilling to undergo surgery
  • A quick way to avoid revision surgery in cases requiring minor corrections

Make sure to manage your expectations for non-surgical rhinoplasty, as your result will not be surgery-level change. This treatment will provide subtle structural changes and help with asymmetry, but will not simulate traditional rhinoplasty results.

Am I a Candidate for Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty?

If you have cosmetic issues with your nose that you want to have corrected without an invasive surgical procedure, non-surgical rhinoplasty is the solution you’ve been looking for. This treatment is ideal for patients who require minimal corrections to their noses to achieve their desired look. If you are in good health and have realistic expectations about the possibilities of the treatment, then you will make a good candidate for the procedure.

Personal Consultation

Your private consultation will allow you time to ask Dr. Ovchinsky any questions you may have about non-surgical rhinoplasty. He will examine your nose to determine what fillers will be helpful and where they may be implemented. Please come to this appointment with a complete list of concerns about your nose structure, what you would like to improve, and information about any past treatments or surgeries you have received.

It is possible Dr. Ovchinsky will perform the treatment on the same day as your consultation. Soft tissue fillers can be injected quickly and efficiently. Avoid using NSAIDs like ibuprofen before your appointment and come with a clean, makeup-free face to speed up the process.

Preparation

You may continue taking most routine medications up until the morning of your injection. If you are on blood thinners, you will be asked to stop them approximately one week prior to your appointment. We also ask that you avoid certain over-the-counter medications. If you are taking some herbal supplements, you should stop those as well as they may contain blood thinning substances. Also, you have to completely quit smoking at least two weeks before your non-surgical rhinoplasty.

Liquid Rhinoplasty Injectable Treatment

For this procedure, you will be sitting comfortably in a procedure chair. Dr. Ovchinsky may opt for a topical anesthetic (numbing agent) to keep you from experiencing discomfort. Once you are ready, he will inject the dermal filler into the areas you wish to fill using a fine needle. You may feel a pinching sensation or pressure when the injectable is applied to the nose.

The entire treatment can take anywhere from 10-15 minutes depending on the amount of filler being used and your desired result. It is quick and easy, and Dr. Ovchinsky will give you a complete time breakdown during your consultation.

Recovery and Results of Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty

You may experience some swelling 24-48 hours after filler injection. Bruising, while possible, usually is not extensive or does not happen at all with liquid rhinoplasty.

There is little to no downtime associated with liquid rhinoplasty, and most patients return to their regular schedules immediately after treatment. You will be able to see the results right away after the procedure. The duration of the effect of non-surgical rhinoplasty is quite variable from patient to patient. On average the result should last about 6 months, but may be significantly longer or shorter depending on a variety of factors (anatomical features, amount of filler used, patients individual characteristics, etc). Either way, non-surgical rhinoplasty is not a permanent solution. You will need to come back in for future injections to keep your results, or schedule a traditional rhinoplasty with Dr. Ovchinsky to receive more permanent nasal restructuring.

Corresponding & Complementary Procedures

Dermal fillers and neuromodulators like Daxxify and Xeomin can also be used to give patients what is known as a liquid facelift. The concept is similar to liquid rhinoplasty, utilizing injectables to add volume or relax muscles that are causing wrinkles. A liquid facelift can restructure the face and reduce wrinkles, as well as other signs of aging, without the necessity of surgery

Dr. Ovchinsky can also lift the jowl and jawline by way of injecting certain fillers in specific areas. By incorporating deep filler injections to just under the jawbone, he creates volume and alleviates wrinkling of the jowling skin to bring back a youthful structure to the face

This procedure can also incorporate a non-surgical eyelid lift, wherein the skin around and underneath the eyes is rejuvenated and plumped to help give the face overall youthful appearance. To lift the eyelids, Dr. Ovchinsky injects neuromodulators into the muscles that pull down the eyebrows, making the eyelids droop. Dark circles can be addressed by injecting filler to help the sunken areas appear lifted and plump. This helps eliminate some of the shading that creates dark circles and makes you look older than you are.
