Age is an important factor to consider before undergoing rhinoplasty. A rhinoplasty, or nose job, is a surgical procedure that improves nasal aesthetics, function, or both. If you undergo a rhinoplasty before your nasal and facial bones fully mature, your nose can become deformed or asymmetrical as you continue to grow.
I am Dr. Alexander Ovchinsky, a double board-certified facial plastic surgeon and Founder and Medical Director of Plastic Surgery of Short Hills. Appropriate Age Range to Receive a Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty patients are commonly between the ages of 18 and 40. However, it is never too late for a rhinoplasty, and patients can be older as long as they can safely undergo surgery. In many cases, I can treat female patients over the age of 15 and male patients over the age of 16 as long as they have already achieved full growth.
Teenage Rhinoplasty
Teenagers ranging from ages 15 to 19 can be good candidates for surgery, and rhinoplasty is actually one of the most popular aesthetic procedures selected by this demographic. For some teenagers, rhinoplasty can be a meaningful step toward greater confidence during an important stage of life. When facial features cause significant self-consciousness or affect how a young person feels socially, thoughtfully planned rhinoplasty—whether before high school or college—may help them feel more comfortable and confident. The decision should always be individualized, with appropriate physical and emotional maturity and realistic expectations. However, one has to be careful operating on the nose too early as the surgery can disrupt its natural growth process. The best way to approach this procedure in teenagers is to perform natural-looking refinements rather than aggressive overcorrections. This ensures that the nose matures harmoniously and aligns with the natural facial proportions through development. (1)
Young Adults
The common age range for a rhinoplasty for young adults is 20 to 35, as this is the time when the facial bones have finished growing, and the skin maintains its youthful elasticity. This is the ideal time to undergo a nose job, and may be referred to by some surgeons as the “golden window.” (2) Since the face has reached maturity, patients are a lot more self-assured in their aesthetic identity, and the skin heals quickly and more predictably during these years.
Older Adults
There is no real “age limit” for a rhinoplasty, so older adults (fitties and beyond) can still be eligible for treatment. Many older adults actually seek this procedure to improve their breathing just as commonly as for cosmetic concerns, as aging cartilage may obstruct airflow or cause the tip of the nose to droop. Undergoing a nose job in later adult years is also an effective anti-aging procedure that rejuvenates the overall appearance of the face. (3)
Key Factors to Consider
Although there is no “right age” to undergo rhinoplasty, what is most important is that patients feel ready and are seeking the procedure for personal reasons, rather than feeling pressured by societal expectations to have “a perfect nose.” Together, we will consider factors such as your aesthetic and functional goals, and determine if your expectations are realistic and achievable.
Benefits
Rhinoplasty is one of the most popular procedures worldwide for its profound aesthetic and functional improvements. Under my expert care, I can help you:
- Enhance nose shape and size
- Improve facial harmony
- Increase self-confidence
- Correct structural abnormalities
- Improve breathing
- Alleviate chronic sinus issues
- Restore a broken nose
- Adjust tip and nostril appearance
Candidates
If you are currently experiencing dissatisfaction with the appearance or functionality of your nose and are confident in your decision to alter your facial appearance, then rhinoplasty can be a well-matched procedure for your goals. Parents or legal guardians must provide consent for minors. To qualify for treatment, you must also be in good general health and hold realistic expectations for your results.

Preparation
Effectively preparing for your rhinoplasty allows for a smoother procedure and optimal results. I recommend you follow these guidelines:
- Cease smoking or using nicotine products
- Pause the use of blood-thinning medications and supplements
- Pick up prescribed medications to have them on hand through your recovery
- Stay well hydrated
I will provide additional instructions specific to your medical history and procedure details. Follow all information closely to facilitate an effective procedure and smooth, swift recovery.
Procedure
I customize the details of your procedure based on your goals, nasal and facial structure, and, although slightly less of an influential factor, your age. I am equally adept in both the “closed” and “open” rhinoplasty techniques. With a closed rhinoplasty, I conceal all incisions entirely within the nostrils. For an open rhinoplasty, there will be one small incision across the columella. The ideal technique for your situation will depend on your goals and unique nasal anatomy. I will provide the exact procedure details during your personal consultation.
Results
Rhinoplasty offers lasting visual and functional improvements, such as enhanced symmetry, improved nose contour and shape, and smoother nasal function. As you emerge with drastic changes in nasal anatomy and overall facial balance, you will also enjoy improved self-confidence.
Corresponding Procedures
Chin Implant
Chin implant and rhinoplasty are frequently performed together to create better overall facial balance and harmony. A chin implant can strengthen a recessed or underprojected chin, while rhinoplasty refines the shape and proportions of the nose. When carefully planned together, these procedures can produce a more balanced profile and a natural, harmonious appearance.
Chin Liposuction
Chin liposuction is a minimally invasive treatment that removes excess fat below the jawline to reduce the appearance of a “double chin.” This procedure contours your facial features to achieve a firmer and smoother neck with better jawline definition.
Brow Lift
A brow lift is a procedure that elevates drooping eyebrows and smooths out deep wrinkles that run across the forehead. This procedure aims to revitalize your upper face and allow you to appear less stern or tired.
Cost of Rhinoplasty in New Jersey and New York
The total cost of your rhinoplasty procedure varies depending on your age, your overall goals for your procedure, if you require enhanced nasal function repair, and whether you decide to pair it with other treatments. During your personal consultation, I will provide you with a detailed cost outline and provide further information about financing options.

FAQ
At what age can you receive a rhinoplasty?
Before undergoing a rhinoplasty procedure, you must be at least 15 years old for a woman and 17 for a man. However, if the surgery is required due to an injury or to correct breathing issues, it may be performed earlier. If a minor is seeking a rhinoplasty, they must have consent from a parent or guardian, and I ask that they are mature enough to understand the procedure and want it for themselves.
How long is the recovery from a rhinoplasty?
Your initial recovery from rhinoplasty typically lasts three weeks; however, residual swelling begins to fade over the span of three months, and final refinements will appear after six months to a year.
What factors determine the right age for a rhinoplasty?
The factors that determine your candidacy for a rhinoplasty are facial anatomy, emotional readiness, skin quality, bone maturation, and possibly more.
What are the results of a rhinoplasty?
A rhinoplasty delivers facial symmetry, improves nose shape and contours, improves breathing, relieves chronic sinus issues, and much more.
Are the results of a rhinoplasty procedure permanent?
Yes, the results of your rhinoplasty are permanent since once the shape of the bone and cartilage is altered, the changes will not revert to their original form. Natural aging may affect the appearance of the nose to a minor degree, but the structural changes will remain intact.
